Exercise Physiology

Exercise physiology helps the body to work in the way that it was designed to. The body is meant to work in a particular way and order, and if either of these is incorrect, then injury and pain may occur. Core muscles functioning inadequately cause many injuries – core muscles being the deep abdominal muscles. The primary role of the core muscles is to protect and stabilise the spine but if the muscles aren’t functioning correctly, then back injuries may occur, as well as neck, knee and shoulder injuries.

Exercise physiology is about training the core muscles to work correctly and also developing exercise programs in order to help you reach your physical goals, whether they are fitness, weight loss, health or rehabilitation. It is perfect for preventing or reducing the risk of injury or for treating an injury after it has occurred. When treating the injury, the practitioner will go to the cause of the problem rather than just treating the symptoms, and this helps ensure that the injury will not recur.

Exercise Physiologists

Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEP) are University qualified allied health professionals who design and deliver exercise interventions for a wide range of acute and chronic injuries and disease states.

AEP’s are trained in preventing the onset of disease through exercise and lifestyle modifications. They provide post –acute exercise rehabilitation and have extensive knowledge, skills and experience in the scientific delivery for chronic and complex medical conditions.

An AEP, can assist with your physical activity options including treatment for post-acute injuries, health and lifestyle modifications, the treatment of chronic diseases or managing your gym and/or home based exercise program.

Conditions Treated

Exercise physiology can be used for the following things, among others:

  • health and fitness evaluation
  • prevention and rehabilitation of sports injuries
  • the prescription of an individualised exercise program
  • strengthening the body’s core
  • helping create weight management strategies
  • advice on suitable stretches and manual handlin

Who are these services available to?

People with chronic conditions and complex care needs who are being managed under an Enhanced Primary Care plan by their General Practitioner are eligible for a Medicare rebate for EP services (under Medicare Plus).  The Chronic Disease Management (CDM) items include, but are not limited to, the management of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, asthma, cancer, musculoskeletal disorders, arthritis and mental health conditions.  Seven out of 10 consultations by General Practitioners within Australia are chronic-disease related

Medicare Rebates

  • From the 1st January 2006 Accredited Exercise Physiologists will be able to provide Medicare services to people with chronic and complex illnesses such as Diabetes, Obesity, Cardiovascular disease, Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Depression and Cancer.
  • Eligible patients will be entitled to a total of 5 allied health visits per year including Exercise Physiology Services. Each of the 5 visits will attract a Medicare rebate of $46.80
  • If you have a chronic health condition (ie longer than 6 months) and want to be eligible to receive a Medicare rebate for our services you will need to obtain a referral from your GP together with a Medicare Care Plan

Health Fund Rebates

  • Many health funds offer rebates for some Exercise Physiology Services depending on which health fund you are in and what level of cover you have. Rebates can be given for items such as gym memberships, exercise equipment (eg for home use), pilates classes, cardiac rehabilitation programs and personal training.
  • We advise all clients that are in a private Health Fund to check and clarify whether they do cover any Exercise Physiology services prior to booking an appointment (if they are wishing to claim a rebate).
  • With the introduction of Exercise Physiologists among the allied health providers under the Medicare Plus Scheme in 2006, it is expected that most Health Funds will recognise all of our services in the very near future.

FUNCTIONAL TRAINING

Burn fat, tone up, strengthen and prepare your body to cope with the demands of life. Functional training utilises the most effective and scientific methods of training and exercises that integrate the core and have a high carry over to your daily or sporting activities.

What's Different about Functional Training ?

Traditional exercise programs often use machines that isolate muscles in unrealistic environments. These can leave you with muscle imbalances and instabilities due to the decreased use of important core and stabiliser muscles. Functional training strengthens and integrates the entire body as it was intended by nature to improve muscle tone, core strength, balance, coordination, and agility.

CORRECTIVE EXERCISE AND STRETCHING

Restore muscle balance and counteract the degenerative effects of life your body. Corrective exercise and stretching programs are scientifically designed for your specific requirements from comprehensive physical assessments.

Why Correct Posture and Muscle Balance?

Our bodies require a natural balance between muscle strength, and flexibility to function optimally. If this relationship is compromised; joints become unstable, posture is impaired, and pain or injury often follows. By assessing the length and strength of various muscles we can correctly identify and retrain muscle imbalances and poor posture using a variety of exercise and stretching techniques.

How Sports Kinesiology Works

The body is a complex network of interactive physical and energetic systems that communicate and work together. Muscles are used as monitors to access neurological feedback from the subconscious brain about your body and find the most appropriate corrective technique to address your priority issues
